How to Fix Leaking Sink Sprayer

How to Fix Leaking Sink Sprayer

Kitchen sink sprayers are genuinely wonderful gadgets that make kitchen cleanup infinitely easier. They can also, of course, develop a leak — much like any other water line. The only trouble? Leaky sink sprayers can be deceptively difficult to identify.

If you hadn’t already noticed that your sink sprayer had a leak, water (and, in some cases, accompanying damage) under your sink may give it away. What do you do once you know that you have a leak in your pullout sink sprayer?

Fixing a Leaking Sink Sprayer

There is, unfortunately, typically no simple fix — and to remedy the problem, you will either have to replace the sprayer head or the sprayer head and the hose.

If, after doing some tests, you find out that the crimp is not leaking, you can go ahead and install a new sprayer head while keeping the same hose. Should you discover that your hose has a leaky crimp, you would be advised to install a new hose and sprayer head.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Your Sink Sprayer

Here’s how you can replace an entire sink sprayer:

  • Since you already had a sink sprayer, your sink’s configuration is compatible with installing a new sink sprayer. You can use the old sprayer as a model when you order a new one, to ensure it will fit into your kitchen well.
  • Using the shut-off valve under your sink, turn the water off so that you can work without causing water damage.
  • Take the flex line connected to your old sink sprayer out by unscrewing the connection, using pliers. Remove the sprayer entirely, along with associated housing.
  • Now, once you have your new sprayer, you are ready to install it. Feed the tail piece through the appropriate hole in your sink, tighten the mounting nut, maneuver the new hose in position, and connect it to the faucet. Two sets of pliers will help you through this slightly tricky process.
  • You can now restore water flow to your sink and cautiously test if the sprayer was installed correctly, without any leaks.

If, after replacing your sink sprayer, you still notice leaks within your kitchen sink, the source of the leak will be elsewhere. Before you pull your hair out in frustration, not knowing where the leak could possibly be coming from, call a leak detection company to identify the problem. Allowing leaks to continue can cause immense damage, so the sooner you take action, the less costly the fix will be.
