Should You Have Your Plumbing Repiped?

Having your plumbing repiped — that is, having your old plumbing removed completely and replaced with brand new plumbing materials — is a large-scale undertaking. It will generally cost you between $4,000 and $10,000, and those figures do not even consider the fact that you will also have to have the relevant sections of your walls and flooring replaced after the repiping is complete. In addition, you will have workers coming in and out of your home, and your daily life will be disrupted over the course of a repiping job.

If you’re anything like the average homeowner, your dominant thought is bound to be “please, no!” just about now.

The good news? Repiping your plumbing won’t be necessary in most cases. There are, however, scenarios in which homeowners will strongly want to consider having their plumbing repiped.

When Might You Want to Have Your Plumbing Repiped?

Opting to have your plumbing repiped can be a financially sound choice, as well as a practical one, in the following scenarios:

  • Your home is over five decades old and still retains its original plumbing. Galvanized steel pipes have a lifespan of around 60 years, and the same holds true for brass pipes. Copper pipes, which are vulnerable to pitted corrosion, may last only 50 years, but can also hold up for seven decades or longer. Cast iron pipes will need to be replaced 50 to 60 years after they were first installed, and the same is true for PVC pipes. Failure to replace old pipes can lead to serious leaks, which can compromise your home’s structural integrity.
  • You have lead or polybutylene pipes. These pose a health hazard and will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
  • You have already repeatedly suffered from pipe leaks and had them repaired, but you keep running into further problems. Your plumbing is, as they say, “running on fumes”, and repiping is a solid choice.
  • You are already carrying out extensive renovations within your home. This is an excellent time to consider repiping. Repiping now will reduce the risk that you run into leaks later on, and protect the investment you are making.

A single pipe leak is not sufficient reason to consider having your entire plumbing repiped on its own.

How Could You Benefit From Having Your Plumbing Repiped?

Having your plumbing repiped can allow you to enjoy better water pressure, higher-quality and safer drinking water, and lower water bills. If you have had several leaks in rapid succession, repiping can give you the peace of mind you need to know that you will not have to deal with further leaks anytime soon.

Copper or PVC/PEX pipes are the gold standard in the 21st century, and these types of plumbing will both last for at least 50 years. On average, it takes around a week for a repiping job to be completed, but you can expect further work on your property as you restore the walls and flooring.

Are you not sure whether your home is a good candidate for repiping, or simply having a leak repaired is the better choice? A leak detection company can prove to be a valuable partner in making this important decision.
